Prebiotics

Prebiotics are naturally occurring fibers that are resistant to intestinal enzymatic digestion, but are fermented by intestinal bacteria of the dog and cat. The principle effect of prebiotics in the diet is to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract - enhancing digestive health and promote strong defenses.

FOS (Fructooligosaccharide), is a prebiotic selectively utilized as energy by certain beneficial bacterial species in the gastrointestinal tract, including Bifidobacterium species. FOS increases the presence of beneficial bacteria while decreasing undesirable bacteria.

When to Recommend Iams Veterinary Formula:
• To help support a dog's strong defenses
• Acute or chronic gastroenteritis
• Colitis
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Dietary indiscretion
• EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency)
• IBD (inflammatory bowel disease)
• SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)

For chronic digestive issues not requiring veterinarian intervention or therapy, recommend to your clients a wellness diet containing FOS.

Probiotics

Probiotics are live, beneficial bacteria. The range and depth of benefits of a probiotic can be species-specific and/or strain-specific. Probiotics have been clinically proven to restore the balance of beneficial and harmful bacteria, improve digestive function, and aid in the relief of diarrhea.
